Every Thursday during our Summer Cookouts, we close the evening with a special story that has touched countless lives—the Pencil Maker story. It’s a simple tale, but when shared with spiritual truths, it becomes a powerful reminder of God’s love, mercy, and purpose for each of us.
Pastor James Lewis shares this story with the kids, weaving it together with the truth of God’s Word. He reminds them that Milwaukee has been holding their hands during their time here, guiding and sharpening them through service, fellowship, and love. And just like pencils, they too will leave a lasting mark.
The Pencil Maker’s lessons are timeless:
“You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.”
Just as we place our lives in God’s hands, He guides us, strengthens us, and leads us into His purpose.“You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you will need it to become a better pencil.”
The trials we face refine us. God’s mercy carries us through, shaping us into who He has called us to be.“You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”
Mistakes will happen—but we can be thankful for God’s forgiveness and His endless mercy.“The most important part of you will always be what’s inside.”
More than anything, what matters is the presence of God’s Spirit moving inside of us. That is what gives true life and meaning.“On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write.”
Every act of kindness, every prayer, every piece of service leaves a mark that will outlast us.

At the close, Pastor James Lewis thanks each young person for the incredible mark they have left here in Milwaukee through their volunteer work—whether serving meals, helping at Adullam, or partnering with other local organizations. Each one of them has been sharpened, guided, and inspired, and in turn, they’ve blessed our city.
The Pencil Maker story reminds us all: the most important part is not what’s on the outside, but what God is doing within us. And when we let Him guide us, we can leave a mark that changes lives forever.
“The most important thing is not what people see on the outside, but God’s Spirit moving inside of you—that’s what will leave a mark that lasts forever.”
